Monster Math

I was working in the quantum-lab, late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my 3D models from their slabs, began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise

I did some math, I did some monster math
The monster math, it was a graveyard smash
I did the math, it caught on in a flash
I did the math, was this Junque or a waste of cash?…

Hah! Just a little jest. If you are old enough you will recognize the words,  rhymes, and meter of the lines above.

The inspiration was my constant feeling of always spending too much time and money making plastic Junque. But the reality for me is this is what hobby-class 3D printing is all about.

Charlie Brown

For those who did not grow up with Charles M. Schulz cartoon strip “Peanuts”, the title is in reference to the only style shirt good ol’ Charlie Brown ever wore.

Charlie wasn’t too close to Quantum Physics in those days but I think his little sister Sally was pretty knowledgable about (or at least questioned) all things and would have commented, “Who cares?”

This print was created on Cetus2 using the “shadow purge.” No purge tower. But that is not the challenge with this design.

This was a design exercise for me with Autodesk Fusion 360. I wanted to design the zigzag on a sloping surface and maintain a smooth continuous pattern around the full circumference.

This requires a fair amount of boolean shape altering at the sub atomic level. That sounds difficult, right? Just kidding. F360 has the tools to do the design (obviously). One just has to master how to use them.

This photo below is generated by F360 and one can see it compares very well with the printed version.

Urge to Purge

I am watching the operation of my Cetus2 two-color printer. I discovered a way to implement what I call “shadow-purge” printing. When changing colors with a single nozzle printer, there is a period of time and distance required for one color to cease flow and the new color to fully become full flow. This period is call a purge.

The nozzle design of Cetus2 makes this time and distance very short. But it still exists for perhaps under a second.

Eye Glasses Dock

Eye Glasses Dock

My spouse has about ten pairs of “readers” scattered around the house. She only uses them to read, so they are mostly just on a table or counter close to where she uses them.

Not having a designated place (to be placed) they often get buried (meaning lost) in plain sight. Even though her general eyesight is fine. You know what I am “getting at.” Ha! I think that is a common human experience.

Out Whaling

Out Whaling

Cetus is a word for a whale. Their logo is the tail of whale (I’ll tell ya’). The Cetus was a sea monster in Greek mythology which both Perseus and Heracles needed to slay. I have three small Cetus (Ceti?) but my newest whale is the Cetus2. Did I mention I received it for free in a contest?

Tiertime (the manufacturer) had a New Years Wish contest and asked for contribution they would judge. Turns out they liked mine the best, and sent me a free (pre-production) Cetus2.
